Overview:
Blind Sailing Association of Canada (BSAC) is a not-for-profit charitable organization whose mandate is to provide recreational sailing opportunities to blind and vision-impaired individuals in the greater Toronto area.
BSAC is seeking one (1) summer student who will be employed for 8 weeks from July until late August 2023.
Part of the funding for this position will come from the Canada Summer Jobs program.
This position is open to all qualified candidates (including blind or vision-impaired applicants. every effort will be made to provide job accommodations if required).
Terms of Employment:
The term of employment is 8 weeks, working 35 hours per week at a rate of $16.00 per hour. Starting date will be July 4.
Work hours are flexible although a schedule must be agreed to with the BSAC Board, and then permission sought for changes; some work can be done from home, with some work also being done on-site at Marina Quay West (539 Queens Quay West) in Toronto.
This position reports directly to a designated member of the board of directors.
This position may involve occasional travel within the Greater Toronto Area and will include some weekend and evening work as negotiated, including participation at monthly Board meetings (currently these meetings are virtual via Google Meet), and in-person member pub nights.
Required Knowledge and Skills
· Must be organized with very strong attention to detail.
· Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to build working relationships.
· Ability to effectively work together with others towards the attainment of a common goal.
· Must be self-motivated with the ability to plan effectively and meet deadlines.
· Must be able to freely move about a working sailboat, and be comfortable walking or guiding members along narrow docks. Training with respect to working with and guiding blind or vision-impaired people will be provided.
· Must be comfortable being in the presence of guide-dogs.
· Ability to coordinate and be comfortable working with a diverse group of people.
· Strong PC skills including Microsoft Office.
· Knowledge of boats and sailing experience is an asset.
Position Tasks & Responsibilities:
1. Schedule and coordinate recreational sailing outings aboard our charity's three sailing vessels. This requires frequent communication via text, phone or e-mail, to bring together blind & vision-impaired members with sighted skippers & volunteer crew. The target is to attain 60 completed sail outings between June and early September of 2023. The sail outings are to include 3-hour day sails, racing events, extended cruises and overnight sail outings to various yacht clubs, marinas and points of interest within and along the shore of Lake Ontario.
2. Market and promote the Blind Sailing Association of Canada, and its program offerings and educational clinics, to the blind & vision-impaired community within the GTA and surrounding areas. Reach out to less active members - and potential new members - to encourage them to join or to participate more regularly. Place special emphasis in engaging younger members to participate in the sailing program.
3. With the help of the board, plan, execute and promote a special event to help celebrate the history, development and cultural heritage of the Spadina/Fort York constituency in which Blind Sailing Canada operates.
4. Effectively communicate (via text, phone or e-mail) all of the pertinent details of every scheduled sail to participants, including blind members and all sighted crew. This will include the date, time, and duration of the sail, the weather forecast and expected marine conditions for the sail, along with a list of participating members & sighted crew.
5. On occasion, help guide blind members between nearby TTC stops and the marina.
6. Dog sit guide dogs while members are on a sail.
7. Collect membership fees and sail fees from members.
8. Maintain an up-to-date and accurate ledger of all fees collected, and reconcile this against the list of completed sail outings. Follow up on any outstanding fees and negotiate payment arrangements with those members currently in arrears. Report any fee discrepancies to the President or Treasurer.
9. Maintain an accurate and up-to-date sail log which will be used to record important details of every scheduled sail, including the date of the sail, the names of all members & crew, the name of the boat used, whether or not the sail was successfully completed, the reason for any cancellations, and notes pertaining to any reported boat damage or missing parts.
10. Coach Visually Impaired members with the use of the Sails web app using the member’s accessible technology of choice.
11. Thoroughly clean the decks and cabins of our sailboats on a regular basis, and ensure all boats are always equipped with all regulation safety equipment (as outlined in the Safe Boating Guide published by Transport Canada).
12. Ensure the fuel tanks on the boats are always at adequate levels. Check that the boat batteries are kept charged in order to ensure proper functioning of the motor, electric bilge, and navigational running lights. Some light lifting and carrying may be required.
13. Make arrangements for coverage during any approved periods of absence.
14. Expectation that any issues of concern/importance will be escalated to a designated Board member.
15. Submit a timesheet to the BSAC on-line by an agreed time each week.
