CBC Nova Scotia is looking for a web-writer who demonstrates and maintains exceptional skill in writing, editing and packaging content for online.

Reporting to the Senior Digital Producer, the successful candidate will be a self-starter, selecting, chasing and writing up the first stories of the day for the CBC Nova Scotia website. Editorial leadership provides guidance, but initiative and independent judgement are expected.

Close co-operation with TV, radio and other newsgathering teams and a sound understanding of curation of stills, video, audio and text is required.

Your work will support Local Services strategy with a focus on three priorities:

Content: In this role, you will ensure that all CBC journalistic standards are met and that our stories are fair, balanced, accurate, thoughtful, immediate and resonate with the communities we serve. You will further our original, enterprise and investigative storytelling and ensure we are talking about what matters most to people throughout Nova Scotia. You’re innovative and will champion new story treatments and new workflows, and will help create a diverse range of content on our TV, digital and social platforms. You’re not afraid to take creative risks, and you inspire others to do the same.

Community: As the industry shifts, local news and community storytelling is more important than ever. You will understand the diverse and changing population in Nova Scotia and the importance of reflecting all our communities in our content.

Culture: You live and promote an inclusive and respectful work culture. You have a solid understanding of the diverse culture of Nova Scotia.

Key Tasks:

  • Writes, edits, packages, and publishes digital content in a clear and concise manner.
  • Curates the local landing page.
  • Ensures the website and stories adhere to the priorities of the day.
  • Gathers and reports information from various sources.
  • Re-writes material as necessary to make it more relevant to the platform.
  • Selects photos, and video/audio clips to accompany online stories.
  • Critically edits material written by others and/or items produced by others.
  • Prepares and writes articles and headlines from information provided by reporters, or wire copy, or original sources.
  • Decides which elements should be included in an item, their order, length and sequence. Creates elements as required.
  • Contributes and pitches ideas or program content; participates in the preparation of program objectives for both local and national pages.
  • Liaises with other staff to ensure required material is available.
  • Publishes CBC material on social media and other platforms.
  • Coordinates the creation of interactive content.

You possess:

  • A university degree or equivalent.

  • Lived experience

  • Two to three years of directly related experience that includes proven knowledge of online and digital news media.
