Recreation Maintenance I or II

The District of Sparwood has an excellent employment opportunity for an enthusiastic, highly motivated individual to join the Community and Facility Services team in the role of Recreation Maintenance I or Recreation Maintenance II. This individual will be working as part of a cooperative team undertaking a variety of tasks requiring agility and physical effort related to the operation and maintenance of the Sparwood Leisure Centre.

Primary Duties

  • Provides janitorial duties related to care and maintenance of District facilities
  • Monitors and maintains facility HVAC, DHW, heating and cooling systems
  • Monitors and maintains arena physical plant and related systems
  • Monitors and maintains pool filtration and heating systems
  • Sets up, takes down and provides supports to programs and events

Additionally, Recreation Maintenance II

  • Completes all duties and responsibilities as outlined in the Recreation Maintenance I and Facilities Worker positions
  • Inspects, conducts repairs and maintains parks, sport fields, turf, trails, fencing, gardens and playground equipment, outdoor recreation facilities and related outdoor spaces

Required Skills and Abilities

  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work under pressure
  • Must be able to utilize a computerized building operating system
  • Must be able to communicate effectively orally, via email and logbooks
  • Ability to perform labor-intensive work, frequently stand and walk throughout the day and work in inclement weather
  • Must have mechanical aptitude to complete repairs to facility systems effectively and efficiently
  • Ability to work with the public in a positive and affective manner

Additionally, Recreation Maintenance II

  • Must have a strong mechanical aptitude to complete repairs to pumps, motors and HVAC systems effectively and efficiently
  • Demonstrated competency and skills related to carpentry, plumbing and electrical systems
  • Has strong problem-solving skills and ability to work under pressure

This position is a unionized position under CUPE local 2698. The 2023 hourly wage rate is $36.39/ hour (Recreation Maintenance I) or $38.20/hour (Recreation Maintenance II) as per the current Collective Agreement. As part of the interview process, shortlisted candidates will be required to participate in a practical portion of the interview at the District of Sparwood Leisure Centre. Qualified applicants who are offered and accept the role may be required to complete a satisfactory pre-employment Background Check. This may consist of all or a combination of the following: Canadian Criminal Record check, an Employment Verification and/or an Education and Accreditation Verification and a Clean Drivers Abstract.
