The Afghan Women’s Organization Refugee and Immigrant Services is a settlement agency providing a wide range of services to immigrants and a SAH (sponsorship agreement holder). Position:

The Peer Researcher will conduct qualitative data collection, perform data management tasks, assist researchers with final report, attend regular meetings and trainings, and perform any other tasks assigned by the Principal Investigator. The Peer Researcher will work under the supervision of the Project Coordinator from AWO, and the Principal Investigator from the Centre for Refugee Studies at York University.

Project Overview:

Gender based violence (GBV) is worldwide issue linked to a range of physical and mental health problems that can have long term impacts. Data from Statistics Canada suggests that gender-based violence (GBV) has significantly increased in the past three years with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic This has brought increased attention to the issue of GBV in Canada. Especially for immigrant (including refugee) communities. Studies suggest that the pandemic may also have affected gender norms, as the pandemic brought more job losses and financial precarity.

The study explores survivor, service provider, and community member perspectives on effective gender-based violence (GBV) interventions, practices, services, and types of support for all forms of GBV for Afghan, Iraqi, Iranian and Syrian women and girls who live in the Greater Toronto Area.

General Duties:

· Conduct qualitative data collection via interviews with individuals from targeted communities in person, or via video or phone

· Perform data management tasks including transcription, data entry, coding, and analysis

· Assist researchers in drafting and submitting the final report

· Attend regular meetings with the research team

· Communicate effectively with the team

· Perform any project-related tasks as assigned by the Principal Investigator or Project Coordinator

Qualifications:

· Candidate preferably from an Iraqi or Syrian community

· Strong knowledge of and connection to community

· Able to reach out to the targeted communities to recruit participants for the research project.

· Fluency and ability to read and write in both English and Arabic

· Knowledge of social services offered for newcomer communities in the Greater Toronto Area, specifically Gender Based Violence-related services

· Basic knowledge of research methods and conducting research and/or working with vulnerable populations such as refugees

Education:

· Graduate, undergraduate, and college students of social sciences or humanities

· Psychology, social work degrees, and related fields are welcomed, however, priority will be given to those with research experience

· Previous experiences in countries other than Canada will be recognized
