Under the direction of the Branch /Hub Manager, the Operator 3 provides assistance for the supervision of seasonal operations staff, as well as the day-to-day safe operation and maintenance and/or security of equipment and machinery of moderate capital value, such as custom application trucks and plant equipment.

Coordinates the various business segments, and related services, ensuring that functions are carried out in a safe, efficient manner while delivering value to customers. This position requires a working knowledge and proper handling of crop protection, seed, grain, delivery, application, and bulk & bagged fertilizer and overall operations. May be required to work at the elevator, in the shop, and/or deliver products with trucks from the elevator, warehouse and store.

SUPERVISION AND LEADERSHIP

Schedules shifts during busy or peak seasons to ensure proper staffing requirements are met, as well as trains seasonal operational employees on proper operating procedures of equipment.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Schedules shipping and receiving of products and services and ensures the proper receiving of product going in or out of the location is recorded accurately and in a timely manner.

Arranges work schedules and determines production and delivery priorities, based on the orders received and on a least cost basis.

Responsible for ensuring full utilization of assets and proper cleanliness practices are continuously being followed. Ensures the overall appearance of the inside and outside of the premises is maintained in a professional and organized manner to promote and enhance the image of the Company.

Mixes and applies crop inputs to fields and growing crops according to recommended rates, procedures, and follows all pesticide labels. Records application data according to regulations and standards.

Drives and operates plant equipment and machinery, such as, bobcat, grain dryer and grain fertilizer elevators, forklifts and/or trucks safely. This includes performing the required daily checks and regular maintenance to minimize risks, injury, and property damage, inside and/or outside the facility as required. Operates equipment (i.e. forklifts, crop applicators) in accordance with established safety standards and proper vehicle operation techniques.

Loads and unloads containers, pallets, or materials and products, safely on trucks, trailers, or railcars by hand or by forklift truck.

Transports custom blended fertilizers, chemicals, seed, and various equipment and ensures all associated documentation, including bills of ladings, shipping tickets are accurate and completed according to schedule. (Applicable to Agronomy Locations only).

Ensures that product in storage meets quality standards and is stored and handled in a safe and organized manner.

Receives grain and grades by sampling, testing, and weighing the product to ensure quality aligns with GROWMARK’s standards, as well as dries, stores, and ships grain as required.

Blends fertilizer, weighs tanks, assists in inventory pre-listing and physical counting, as required and creates blend sheet on daily production schedules for general fertilizer products, as well as pesticide combination products. (Agronomy locations only)

Ensures that proper vouchers are completed on all incoming goods and verifies the correctness of receipts against bills of lading or other records, checks for shortages, identifies damaged goods, etc.

Sets up material handling, blending, manufacturing, storage, transport and application equipment for blending and delivery of products, such as fertilizer chemicals, and/or grain, according to recommended rates and procedures.

Counts inventory on a monthly basis and records this inventory on count sheets to be calculated by Branch Manager.

May be required to weld machinery and other equipment, as necessary.

Actively participates in education and training provided by GROWMARK with the purpose of maintaining and developing technical and industry knowledge and enhancing customer service.

Adheres to all company policies, procedures, and business ethics codes in all areas, e.g. safety, credit, proper management of assets, pricing, uniforms, etc., and maintains the appropriate professional image.

Follows the GROWMARK Workplace Health, Safety & Environmental policies and procedures, and ensures that employees adhere to the Occupational Health and Safety act (OHSA).

Performs other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS

Education and Experience

Normally requires a high school diploma or equivalent, or a combination of experience and training to provide the required knowledge and skills to safely operate transportation equipment, along with supervisory experience to provide daily leadership to all production personnel.

Must possess a valid G driver’s license (class DZ would be an asset), a driving abstract that represents a history of safe operation, as well as the ability to maintain insurability.

Other Requirements

May be required to work extended hours, particularly during peak seasons.

Must have or be able to obtain various licenses, permits and certificates, as required, e.g.: forklift certification, TDG as well as must have and maintain a valid class G or DZ driver’s license (depending on work location), and a clean driving abstract.

Must be able to be trained in GROWMARK’s Workplace Health, Safety & Environmental policies, and procedures, including Accident Reporting, Emergency Response Plan, Fire Safety, General Safety Rules, Health & Safety Rights, Health & Safety Roles and Responsibilities, Safe Manual Lifting, Slips Trips and Falls, and WHMIS.

May be required to be trained in the following: Agriculture Exterminator, Chemical Handling and Spills Response, Confined Space, Defensive Driving, Grain Handling, Hot Work, Lifting Devices (Forklift, Payloader, Skidsteer), Lockout/Tagout, Nutrient Technician, Pesticide Vendor, Respirator Fit Testing, Transportation of Dangerous Goods, Working at Heights/Fall Arrest.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

Mental Effort

The incumbent works independently within established policies and work procedures set by the Branch Manager and is called upon to make decisions that involve weighing alternatives within a framework of customary practice.

Requires periods of concentration normally moderate to occasionally high in intensity. Must remain alert and be able to focus attention while operating equipment, handling products, and communicating with our customers.

The incumbent may also encounter moderate to occasionally high mental stress increases prior to and during month and activities, and during peak season, which may require overtime, including weekend work due to machinery or staffing shortages.

Physical Effort

Physical tasks may be required that involve turning, sitting, pulling, reaching, climbing, bending or stooping. In addition, they may be required to lift, load or put away heavy loads. Stairway and ladder climbs are occasionally required.
