Job Summary

As a part of Calgary Economic Development’s Marketing & Communications team, the Communications Manager will be responsible for the creation and delivery of a comprehensive communications and media relations plan for the organization with oversight and strategic support from the Director, Communications.


This role also writes and edits internal and external communications including key message briefings, executive speaking notes, news releases, reports, presentations, and stories for various channels.


The Manager of Communications reports to the Director, Communications.


What You'll Be Doing

  • Work with the Director, Communications to build a communications and media strategy in alignment with the organization’s priorities and business objectives and lead the execution of all aspects of the plans.
  • Proactively identify storylines and opportunities to advance the growth of CED’s narrative.
  • Write and edit key communications materials such as but not limited to press materials, scripts for executive engagement at events and press conferences, press releases, newsroom stories, speeches, and reports.
  • Manage relationships with external stakeholders including media, industry, and government partners, particularly around events and speaking engagements.
  • Support with media relations and media monitoring.
  • Incorporate best practices and tools to optimize work processes.
  • Make sure messaging to all internal and external stakeholders is clear and consistent, upholding the brands of Calgary and Calgary Economic Development.
  • Recommend and create performance indicators to evaluate and monitor the progress of communications, media relations and public affairs activities.

We’d like to know more about you if you have:

  • 7-10 years of progressively increasing experience in a directly related area during which professional capability has been clearly demonstrated - main focus areas: communications, media relations and public affairs.
  • Experience working with executive office, business stakeholders, sponsors, and government officials.
  • Experience writing for a variety of documents such as articles, stories, news releases, presentations, and speeches.
  • Experience dealing with, the media, social media, government stakeholders and executive office.
  • Solid background in building, communicating, and implementing communications plans and exposure to corporate communications in a fast-paced environment.
  • Superior writing skills and the ability the cut through the noise and jargon to produce pithy content.
  • Strategic mindset to develop communication plans.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively interact with senior management.
  • Ability to simultaneously manage multiple urgent projects and adapt to a changing environment.
  • Strong ability to act independently, stay organized and focus on priorities.
  • Knowledge of the business line is an asset.
  • Experience in a large corporation with national or international operations.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail and diligence.

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Public Relations, Marketing, Communications, or any other relevant field.


Experience:

Minimum 7-10 years of progressively increased responsibility in communications, media relations and public affairs.

Membership with professional organization (IABC / CPRS) is considered an asset.

  • Strong B2B writing skillset for various corporate audiences.
  • Understanding of business audience, content plans, and bringing a variety of communication styles into a single voice.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills; detail oriented and structured.
  • Knowledge and experience in communications strategy and planning
  • Issues management and crisis communications experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, a team player.
  • Proven project management skills with the ability to multi-task and meet deadlines.
  • Experience working with politically sensitive and confidential information.
