ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

Based at the Detour Lake Mine site, we currently have an exciting opportunity for a Environment and Sustainability Superintendent to join our Environment and Sustainability team reporting to the Manager, Environment and Sustainability.

Detour Lake is the second largest gold producing mine in Canada with the largest gold reserves and substantial growth potential. The open pit mine is located in northeastern Ontario, approximately 300 kilometres northeast of Timmins and 185 kilometres by road northeast of Cochrane, within the northernmost Abitibi Greenstone Belt. The mine is situated in the area of the historic Detour Lake open pit/underground mine operated by Placer Dome which produced 1.8 million ounces of gold from 1983 to 1999. The Detour Lake operation has a mine life of approximately 22 years with an average gold production of 659,000 ounces per year.

The Environment and Sustainability Superintendent will provide leadership in developing and coordinating Environment personnel and is responsible for coordinating Detour Lake Mine Site Environmental Management Systems. The successful candidate will ensure compliance with all environmental regulations and agreements while maintaining respect and protection of the environment consistent with our corporate strategy.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Lead the site environmental team including coaching and developing staff;
  • Maintain compliance with all regulatory, permitting, monitoring and reporting requirements;
  • Develop, implement and maintain environmental management systems for all air, surface water, groundwater, geochemistry, tailings, waste and wildlife programs;
  • Monitor the impact of the operation on the natural environment, identify areas of risk and propose adaptive management strategies to mitigate impacts;
  • Promote site awareness of environmental requirements and conditions for operations;
  • Research and propose cost effective, efficient and compliant approaches;
  • Provide support and advice to department heads on inclusion of environmental consideration in work plans;
  • Undertake regular site audits to ensure compliance with policies and procedures;
  • Ensure incident response measures are in place, lead investigations and prepare reports.

QUALIFICATIONS

Our ideal candidate has:

  • University degree in an Environmental Engineering, science or environmental discipline;
  • 5-8 years progressive experience in an environmental role within a mining operation;
  • 3-5 years in a supervisory role with demonstrated success mentoring a team of professionals;
  • Extensive knowledge of Canadian and Ontario legislation relevant to the mining industry;
  • Advanced MS Suite skills;
  • Knowledge of environmental management systems;
  • Influential, with strong negotiation skills;
  • Excellent verbal, written and listening skills.
