The department also manages the relationship with the U of T Bookstore and the N'sheemaehn Child Care Centre on campus.

Your Opportunity:
Under the direction of the Director, Business Development and Special Advisor to CAO, the position is responsible for full managerial authority over the staff in the department of Retail and Conference Services in the areas of human resources, labour relations and financial management.
In collaboration with the Director this position determines the vision for the unit and continues to develop strategies to grow the business opportunities of the unit and ensuring its alignment with the Academic Mission. The growth achieved with improve revenue support to the University as well as providing excellent customer service to the client experience.
The Assistant Director is responsible for managing all Conference & Event Services operations as well as utilizing UTSC (University of Toronto at Scarborough) facilities, when not in use for academic activities, for the purpose of generating revenue for the University. The incumbent is responsible for the promotion and management of the commercial operations in the areas of conference services, facilities rental, internal event logistics, summer visitor housing and Miller Lash House.nThis position is also responsible for overseeing the management of the Academic Printing & Custom Publishing Services department.
Qualifications Required:
EDUCATION:
University degree, preferably in business or hospitality or acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge of catering/hospitality standards, health & safety regulations and contract development/management.
EXPERIENCE:
Minimum of seven (7) years of related experience which should include exposure to the Hospitality and/or conference industry through employment and management positions (preferably multi-unit experience in hospitality industry), conference, residence, bookstore and other campus operations. Experience in contract management, business plan preparation and presentation. Demonstrated experience/ability to implement significant change and to introduce new services successfully. Experience managing in a unionized environment. Also required to understand and have experience with “one card” and other systems: how they work, key success factors, and how to implement. Experience with conference, residence, bookstore and other campus operations.
SKILLS:
Strong computer skills with work experiencing using MS Office (Word, Excel, Power Point) and other database management and tracking software.
OTHER:
Demonstrated ability to turn operations around and successfully introduce organizational and a variety of other significant changes. Ability to provide excellent client service in an entrepreneurial environment. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, conceptual and strategic thinking skills, sound analytical and problem-solving skills. Highly developed business planning skills including operations and financial planning, and budget preparation. Contract management experience. Familiarity with labour relations practices. Strong presentation, written and verbal communication and organizational skills. Judgement, tact, diplomacy, ability to work independently and with teams. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to initiate and execute. There is also a need to understand and take corrective action with respect to Health and Safety and the handling of food by contractors.
