Education, including medical education, is not just a strategic priority, it is an integral part of SHN’s identity. The Vice President, Education will be responsible for the development, coordination, integration and delivery of a supportive learning environment for all health professional learners based at SHN.
Building on SHN’s rich history that includes strong partnerships with several academic institutions, including an affiliation with the University of Toronto dating back to the 1970s, health professional education continues to grow every year at this organization. SHN is home to more than 400 faculty-appointed physicians, who educate medical students, residents, and fellows, as well as midwife, dental, and physician assistant students. The University of Toronto Family Residency Program brings in a dynamic group of learners to SHN each year.
SHN is proud to support the development of the future Scarborough Academy for Medicine and Integrated Health (SAMIH) with the University of Toronto. SAMIH will address the under-met health needs of the eastern Greater Toronto Area by providing an inclusive hub for education and strengthening connections among healthcare providers in the region. Upon reaching full enrolment, 30 physicians, 56 physician assistants, 30 nurse practitioners, 40 physical therapists, and 300 undergraduate science students will graduate through SAMIH. This will help to advance the region’s clinical capacity across multiple disciplines. - Development of an interprofessional collaborative education strategy for learners, staff, physicians, patients and families that promotes a culture of continuous learning and improvement
- Creation of an annual workplan to achieve the goals of the strategic priorities for education at SHN
- Oversight and direction of all hospital-sponsored education activities for SAMIH students and other health professional learners
- Provision of a supportive and innovative learning environment for learners, including resources and space required for training
- Building a sustainable education infrastructure to enable effective strategic planning, prioritization of operational growth, and efficient budgetary planning and oversight

Responsibilities: The Vice President, Education’s responsibilities include:
- Oversee SHN’s clinical student placements program ( shn.ca/clinical-student-placements )
- Maintain a high quality of education for all health professional learners, including supporting the development and implementation of health professional programs’ curricula and emphasizing interprofessional training opportunities
- In collaboration with leadership in the U of T Temerty Faculty of Medicine’s MD Program, oversee the activities of the SAMIH Academy Director, with a focus on activities within SHN sites
- Overall direction for recruiting, supervising, evaluating, and mentoring local site directors, academic clinicians, and clinical faculty members, and preceptors, including coordinating relevant faculty development
- Oversee the educational elements for hospital and health professional program accreditations
- Serve as a member of the Toronto Academic Health Science Network’s Education Committee and other relevant health education committees and organizations (e.g., U of T’s Hospital University Education Committee, Ontario Hospital Association’s Education Committee, etc.)
- Establish and foster productive and collaborative external relationships with SAMIH partners, other educational institutions, the Scarborough Ontario Health Team and other partners
- Coordination of a seamless and integrated onboarding experience for all learners
- Support and participate in faculty development, recruitment and evaluation, and planning and implementation of faculty remediation for teaching performance, as required
- Ensure that all learners meet legislative and regulatory compliance requirements
- Set the tone for a safe and quality-focused culture to ensure continuous learning and improvement amongst learners, staff, and physicians
- Ensure SHN provides the necessary resources and space required for training and in alignment with relevant collective agreements
- Promote a healthy environment of wellness and physical and psychological safety for learners and engage with the leadership of health professional programs to collaboratively address issues or concerns, as required
- Collaborate effectively with the chief of staff in physician human resources planning to ensure that SHN meets its educational mandate as Canada’s leading community teaching health network
- Assume other duties or additional responsibilities as assigned by the CEO
