Sustainability & Energy Data Intern (Co-Op) Job at The Cadillac Fairview Corporation Limited
Role Impact:
The Sustainability and Energy Data student will be a key member of the Carbon, Climate Resilience, Energy, Sustainability and Technology (CREST) team. The individual will support corporate and operational initiatives and technology that positively impact communities through energy and operational efficiencies across our portfolio.
CF’s enterprise-level, national sustainability program known as Green at Work (GAW) has been a first in Canadian real estate since 2008. Through this program, CF has reduced energy, water and waste and contributed to overall GHG emissions reduction of 56% since 2008.
The CF Energy Smart Operations (ESO) program is an automated fault detection monitoring and analytics program for the building automation system. This transformational initiative is designed to transition from a reactive to a proactive state of operating our buildings. This platform will be the foundation of Smart Buildings and provides insight into the performance of our buildings, allowing for data-driven decisions to support occupant wellness, operational efficiency and energy efficiency.
The individual will gain valuable career-building experience through supporting GAW, energy and other sustainability and smart building initiatives at CF.
What you will deliver:
The key responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Support the CREST team with development and implementation of national programs, and projects for energy, water and waste reductions by performing administrative, communications, analytical and data related tasks related to GAW:
- Metering data collection
- Property performance data collection and analysis (eg sq. ft., occupancy, operating hours, diesel, refrigerants)
- Property performance reports
- Coordination with utilities
- Supporting resources, training and template development
- Data administration, collection and analysis for reporting to CF’s stakeholders on program targets, certification and regulatory requirements for participation in GRESB, LEED, ENERGY STAR (ESPM), EWRB, CSR, client & co-owner reporting and Energy Management.
- Support monthly energy/water performance review process through leveraging data from the GAW Platform
- EWRB:
- Utility data collection, analysis for data quality, and input to ENERGY STAR tool
- Confirm MPAC and postal codes and other required reporting details for submission
- Support utilities invoice management program administration and enhancements (e.g. new account additions, identifying tenant accounts, utility budget tracking, missing bills)
- Develop and populate report templates, Excel spreadsheets/Google sheets; enter data, perform calculations and submeter / utility bill data analysis
- Perform research to support sustainability certification strategy (eg Wellness, True Waste / Sites), Scope 3 / embodied carbon, and SBTi targets
- Support incentive application process for energy and sustainability pilot programs.
- Create graphs and visual presentation materials for stakeholder communication
- Other duties as assigned

What you need to succeed:
- Enrolled in Undergraduate program (2nd year or above) or Masters degree in a related discipline such as Sustainability, Engineering, Building Science or Environmental Science
- Strong knowledge within Excel and using advanced functions. Familiarity with PowerBI and SEQUEL will be an asset.
- Experience working in an office environment
- Previous training and/or work experience in real estate, sustainability, building efficiency or engineering is an asset
- High computer literacy with good working knowledge of Gmail, Google Suite (Drive, Sheets, Sites, Forms, etc.) Word, PowerPoint, Visio, SmartSheets
