Seeking personal support worker. (No experience or certifications in the field are required.)

Looking for someone who can fill 2 evening shifts on a regular basis on Wednesday and Thursday nights, 6 pm - 10:30 pm.

Shifts are typically 8:30 am - 2:30 pm, 2:30-5:30 pm, or 6 - 10:30 pm

MUST BE CURRENTLY LOCATED IN HALIFAX/ HRM

Do you enjoy cooking, doing handy things, and keeping environments clean/tidy? Do you have strong communication skills, can follow directions, and take initiative in managing aspects of a home? Looking for flexible and accommodating work?

Starting mid April for approximately 9 hours/ week. Additional availability is an asset. Includes weekends and holidays. Exact times vary with my personal, medical, and work schedules.

Description

This position is a support role for me (Andrew, the employer) to go about my daily life as a disabled person. It is important that the person in this role sees themselves as taking on a supportive, client-centered approach, (taking my lead) rather than “care-giving” and has a willingness to learn. No experience in personal support work required. On-the-job training will be provided by the employer.

Candidates must adhere to public health guidelines. Personal protective equipment is provided for use according to the Health Authority guidelines for home support workers under COVID-19. The work environment is queer and trans friendly, sex and body positive, and scent and smoke free (with the exception of medicinal marijuana vapour and mild natural scents).

This position is great for people who can work somewhat flex hours, enjoy working one-on-one, and want to be a part of building a culture of community and inclusion for people with disabilities.

Location: South end Halifax

Responsibilities:

  • Tube feeding preparation and supporting with in cooking and baking (gluten and dairy free). This is one of my passions and will include helping with a food blog!
  • Accompaniment on trips outside the home for appointments and errands (i.e. grocery shopping) by carshare or access-a-bus. Want to go to movies, shows, the beach, parks, etc while you work?
  • General house cleaning, organization, and laundry. Do you notice and take initiative to keep spaces clean?
  • Support with positioning, transfers, physio exercises and stretching.
  • Providing assistance preparing for the day and nighttime with bathing, dressing, and personal grooming. If you've done it for yourself, that's experience!
  • Administrative support
  • Assisting with medication management (including crushing tablets and administering through a g tube, and also preparing medicinal marijuana for vaporizing)

Requirements:

  • Comfortable with providing personal care, food preparation and household tasks
  • Capable of light lifting (ex. laundry and groceries.)
  • Valid first aid and CPR
  • Up to date vaccinations
  • Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check upon hiring

  • Open to travel and overnight shifts for work trips. These are rare, but they may come up. If they do happen, staff do not need to be vigilantly awake but a light sleeper.
  • Basic knowledge of household maintenance skills (such as sewing or putting up a shelf)
  • Familiar with medicinal marijuana and vaping
  • Has a driver’s license, clean driving record, and reliable access to transportation

Pay rate: $18 + 4% vacation pay

This position is funded through the Self-Managed Care Program. The Self-Managed Care Program is a program of the Nova Scotia Department of Health and Wellness which provides funding to people with disabilities to hire their own personal support workers.

  • 4 hour shift
  • Night shift

COVID-19 considerations:
All staff must wear masks while at work. The majority of work occurs in environments with only Andrew and one staff.
