The Trauma Program Registry provides appropriate, accurate and timely analyses and interpretation of surgical and trauma care data to the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care (MOHLTC), Canadian Institute of Health Information (CIHI), the American College of Surgeons (ACS), and physicians and health care professionals at St. Michael’s Hospital (SMH) and St. Joseph’s Health Centre (SJHC). In addition to this important role in patient care, the department also participates in the provision of data for medical, nursing and other health care provider education and quality improvement initiatives and is actively committed to research for the advancement of scientific knowledge in trauma and surgical care. Information generated in the registries informs provider, hospital and program funding decisions.

The primary responsibilities of the Registry Data Analyst include:

  • Utilizing excellent analytical skills to provide support for quality improvement project teams and ensuring program financial, clinical and quality objectives are achieved, while analyzing and utilizing excellent understanding of data to develop effective plans to facilitate decision making and project progress;
  • Maximizing the potential of quality surgical and trauma care provision through the generation of timely and accurate data reports and by continually looking for methods of increasing patient safety, quality of care and appropriate resource utilization;
  • Performing clinical data management, interpretation and analysis responsibilities working with surgical teams to ensure the appropriate development, analysis and monitoring of clinical care including participating in international, national, regional and site based quality improvement projects;
  • Performing statistical management, interpretation and other organizational responsibilities while acting as a primary contact for our surgical and trauma teams interpreting information and ensuring the integrity and efficacy of surgical and trauma data, while also informing corporate and program decision initiatives;
  • Communicating effectively with hospital wide departments, building a relationship to ensure corporate and program clinical objectives are met;
  • Accurately code and abstract clinical and administrative data, using standardized national and international classification systems and abstracting software, from patient health records in accordance with international (ACS), national (CIHI), and provincial (MOHLTC) standards. The coding specialist ensures coding/data collection accurately reflects chart documentation and participates in regular quality assurance activities.

Requirements:

  • Completion of a Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management, or other related field required, clinical background preferred;
  • Completion of an accredited postsecondary Health Information Management diploma program required;
  • One (1) year related experience working in a health care environment preferred;
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Products, e.g., Word, Excel, Access, Visio and PowerPoint, required;
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills with demonstrated ability to apply logical thinking to gathering and analyzing information;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills required;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills required;
  • Excellent coordinating and facilitating skills required;
  • Ability to implement advanced strategies for gathering, reviewing and analyzing data requirements;
  • Ability to prioritize requirements and apply best practices for effective communication and problem solving required.
  • Good communication skills with the ability to listen for clarity and meaning to ensure mutual understanding in a conversation required;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Coding Standards and reporting required;
  • Demonstrated team player with the ability to interact with coworkers and clinicians in a positive manner required.
