What you’ll be working on

The Product and Engineering Program Manager role is an exciting opportunity to have widespread impact in the beating heart of our client, where their marketplace is evolved for the millions of their buyers and sellers visiting it daily.

The Product and Eng. Program Manager role accelerates the delivery of important and urgent projects/programs that further the Objectives of the Product and Eng Org and their mission of Keeping Commerce Human.

Product and Eng Program Managers operate from the Product and Eng Strategy & Operations team in PSS, embedded in the org of their CPO and CTO. This team is liquid by design, it flows from priority to priority, contained to either buyer or seller facing initiatives, or internal platforms and tools initiatives. This role reports into the Sr Manager, Product and Engineering Program Management.

Project/programs that the Product and Eng Program Manager undertakes are both urgent and important for the Product and Eng Org, have a well-understood impact for their customer, involve multiple teams and functions, have a medium-high degree of software development complexity, and have an expected completion target. These criteria are validated by the S&O Director, CPO, CTO and their Leads before a Program Manager is assigned. When projects and programs are completed, the Product and Eng Program Manager transitions to drive the outcomes and operations of new projects/programs awaiting delivery. Depending on the scope and intensity of a project/program, a Program Manager will undertake between 1-2 at a time, but no more.

The role does not serve any one specific team or function, therefore it is not leveraged for ongoing operational support for teams or functions (e.g. like a department assistant, operations manager, or leave cover role etc). This means that the role is not tasked with e.g. helping a team set their OKRs, run their weekly Agile ceremonies, or improve onboarding for new hires.

A person in this role is expected to do the following:

First and foremost, you will always partner with a Sponsor whose role is accountable for the success of the project/program, while your role is responsible for its success. With their guidance and oversight, you will:

  • Support the development of strategy, objectives, prioritization and roadmap for the project/program and be an ambassador for them to the broader Product and Eng Org
  • Maintain standards for collaboration and optimizing information flows for the program (what are the program’s objectives, why is it important, and when, where, how they meet, communicate, and decide)
  • Maintain a clear governance model to support effective decision-making and transparent information sharing between different contributing groups
  • Build credibility, establish rapport, and maintain communication with stakeholders at multiple levels, in different functions
  • Produce transparent and effective communication to stakeholders regarding program progress, flags and decisions throughout its lifecycle
  • Spot and remove impediments to ensure objectives are achieved
  • Assist with coordination of upstream/downstream dependencies when they inevitably occur
  • Negotiate any changes in stakeholder and/or external party expectations in relation to the program’s strategy, goals, prioritization or roadmap
  • Identify gaps in the program’s operations, build scaffolding to fix them, and assess your practices to see if they’re suitably effective
  • Zoom in and zoom out, to see how all the moving parts should tie together, and systemize them into a functioning program aligned to a single set of objectives
  • When required, this role is expected to partner effectively with the Strategic Program Management team to accelerate the specific contributions of Product and Eng to our client’s company-level XFN and strategic programs.
