CBC News and CBC News Network are looking for an energetic and forward-thinking producer to take on an important editorial role assigned to the program Rosemary Barton Live.
Rosemary Barton Live is CBC News Network’s weekly Sunday political show. It first launched in November 2020 and is already showing strong audience growth as a destination for viewers who want political news and smart discussion about national issues on Sunday Mornings. The two-hour program airs live 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. ET on CBC News Network, and also 11 to 11:30 a.m. on CBC Television.
Your role will focus on contributing to Rosemary Barton Live's journalistic impact by chasing and producing interviews with key newsmakers and national figures, as well as supporting the host with major interviews, conventions and special coverage and in her contributions to related programs as CBC’s Chief Political Correspondent, and to support other CBC News programs and platforms in leveraging the content of Rosemary Barton Live.
The hours of work will be Wednesday to Friday 9 a.m. to 7 p.m, and Sunday, 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. but are subject to change due to operational requirements.
Your role
The Producer is expected to contribute significantly to the editorial direction of the show. This includes producing broadcast and online-specific stories and segments and sourcing TV material in order to promote and capitalize on significant news and the most influential guests. An interest in and knowledge of politics in Canada and the United States is essential for this role, and experience covering politics an asset.
The producer will also seek out new stories and voices, contribute creative and innovative story pitches, uphold a commitment to original journalism, and make editorial decisions when necessary.
Other duties include chasing guests, researching stories, writing scripts, working with the Chief Political Correspondent to provide research, and producing graphics and video editing. There is a requirement to develop meaningful stories and contacts as well as ensure a diversity of voices and perspectives in all news treatments. The producer must be able to effectively and creatively respond to breaking and live news. There is often a requirement to coordinate the activities of others for the production of this material. Work must adhere to CBC journalistic and/or program policies, practices and standards but initiative and independent judgment are required.
As well, supporting the host on CBC News Network special broadcast or other programs as needed.

Key tasks:
  • Initiate, pitch and pursue news coverage ideas and treatments for Rosemary Barton Live. Establish and maintain contacts with key political players and their staff.
  • Exercise editorial responsibility as delegated by senior producers.
  • Work closely with members of the CBC’s Parliamentary Bureau with the goal of breaking stories.
  • Participate in the evaluation of all aspects of the production.
  • Prepare scripts and write backgrounders, question lines and segment introductions; ensure adherence to the style and format of both the program and online platforms; work with the host to provide research as needed.
  • Develop program, online and social media content including writing, researching and/or editing (text, graphics, video).
  • Obtain and organize technical and production resources required by the program.
  • Edit, encode, digitize and package audio and video material for the daily program and a website or social media platform.
  • As required, performs the following tasks:
  • Initiate editorial pitches, chase guests, research stories, prepare background information, brief the host, write interview introductions and question lines.
  • Assign, direct and coordinate the work of other personnel working on a project for which the producer is responsible.
  • Produce the host.
  • Edit and mix, or direct the editing and mixing of audio and/or visual elements.
  • Write continuity, re-write or edit text created by others.
  • Assist in maintaining a level of communication or rapport with members of the appropriate technologies.
  • Perform other production or administrative tasks associated with the smooth functioning of the newsroom, program unit or station.
  • Field production including planning, coordinating and producing off-site interviews and remote broadcasts.

We are looking for a candidate with the following:
  • A university degree or equivalent.
  • Minimum five years’ experience working in a national or local newsroom in daily news.
  • A thorough passion for, knowledge and understanding of Canadian politics and its place alongside both American and wider international political issues.
  • Proven journalistic skills in producing and directing accountability interviews with elected leaders & those in positions of power including: Ministers of the Crown, Members of Parliament, Premiers, legislators and municipal leaders.
  • Ability to take initiative, be proactive, and work independently.
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities and to respond to many competing demands in a short space of time without sacrificing creativity or quality.
  • Proven capacity to problem solve and troubleshoot in fixed time environments.
  • Ability to write clearly and concisely.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent production skills including graphics creation.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop meaningful stories and develop contacts.
  • Understanding of CBC News, CBC News Network and the Ottawa Parliamentary Bureau.
  • Knowledge of, and ability to file, online stories and use social media to communicate content.
  • Experience creating digital-only editorial content and working in a cross-media, multi-platform programming environment.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, overtime and weekends, as required.
  • Ability to participate in a highly creative and collaborative team in a dynamic work environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to take direction and work cooperatively within a small production unit.
  • Bilingualism (English and French) is considered an asset.
