SCOPE AND PURPOSE
As a peer of the multidisciplinary team combining addiction, housing, employment and educational support, the Peer Support Worker (PSW) provides supportive mentorship during the recovery and capacity building of residents and alumni by engaging in their physical and mental health needs, as well as being a bridge between residents and other members of the multidisciplinary team.
The Peer Support Worker will work in conjunction with Phoenix staff to effectively bridge the gap between staff and residents.
This position is accountable for, but not limited to
§ Providing support to residents one on one and in groups.
§ Helping residents execute their discharge plan.
§ Providing support around housing (educating residents on market housing, supportive housing and/or recovery housing in the community).
§ Helping to support residents by discussing goals and communicating feedback to Counselor, Case Manager or Mental Health Worker.
§ Encouraging residents to engage in group activities.
§ Helping support residents to make healthy lifestyle choices.
§ Assisting staff to educate and promote harm reduction practices.
§ Providing staff with support during crisis intervention.
§ Using the supportive recovery model and taking a holistic approach, using the biological, psychological, social and spiritual approach to recovery.
§ Embracing the Values, Mission, and Vision statement for Phoenix Society.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIP
The Peer Support Worker reports directly to the Peer Support Worker Coordinator and Program Manager – Community Counselling and Alumni Services.
KEY WORK RESPONSIBILITIES
§ Support individuals to identify their own achievable goals.
§ Encourage discussion around future housing needs beyond the 2 years of the Supportive Recovery Housing program.
§ Draw on individual experiences with addiction, and mental wellness challenges to provide empathy and support to residents to live their most meaningful, authentic lives.
§ Support residents by discussing goals and communicating feedback to the Counselor, Case Manager or Mental Health Worker.
§ Assist residents to identify barriers and determine positive actions to overcome them.
§ Assist staff with monitoring the general well-being of residents who might be experiencing substance induced acute psychosis and or mental health decompensation.
§ Provide a safe environment to facilitate support groups such as AA, NA, CA, and SMART meetings.
§ Communicate with Counselor, Mental Health Worker, Case Manager and Program Assistants on important conversations with residents who may need extra support.
§ Maintain client confidentiality and respond to client rights to health care information.
§ Convey any information required for documenting on the facility brief.
PEER RELATIONSHIPS
The Peer Support Worker will work in conjunction with Phoenix staff to effectively bridge the gap between staff and residents. The Peer Support Worker will work with the Peer Support Worker Coordinator to prioritize tasks and work to support the Phoenix Clients.
ETHICAL PRACTICE
The Peer Support Worker will use the code of ethics and an ethical framework to ensure the following:

§ Appropriate professional boundaries with residents and staff members.
§ Recognize and respect the values, opinions, needs and beliefs of residents and staff.
§ Identify and work to resolve situations involving moral and ethical conflict.
QUALITY ASSURANCE
§ Identifies areas for improvement and increased efficiency in building operations, technology, services offered, etc. and reports to manager.
§ Ensures all required reporting is completed as required.
§ Ensures that program regulations, policies and procedures are followed.
§ Maintains up to date knowledge of internal fire safety policies and procedures as well as other emergency procedures.
§ Organizes and assembles detailed and accurate administrative reports, as required.
§ Maintains agency standards of work quality.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
§ Two years of lived experience in recovery from substance use, or co-occurring substance use and mental illness.
§ Grade 12 and one year of recent related work/peer support experience in substance use, mental health, homelessness or health services navigation, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
§ Training in Peer Support or completion of a Substance Use Counselling or Social Services certificate is preferred but not required.
§ Demonstrated ability to perceive situational or other stressors, subtle changes in motivation that elevate risk, and act proactively in response.
§ Demonstrated ability to engage and involve adults in learning activities.
§ Demonstrated ability to adjust one’s approach to meet the demands and needs of constantly changing conditions, situations, and people and to work effectively in challenging situations.
§ Ability to work collaboratively and productively with a multidisciplinary team.
§ Strong critical thinking and decision-making skills.
§ Willingness to learn and participate.
§ Appreciative of and sensitive to a culturally diverse work setting.
§ Able to give and accept feedback constructively.

§ Experience with mental health barriers and substance misuse disorders.
§ Ability to maintain an elevated level of performance while working independently
§ Strong organizational and critical thinking skills
§ Effectively communicate professionally, verbally and written in English
§ Current First Aid with CPR
§ Current WHMIS certification
§ Criminal record check for working with vulnerable populations
WORKING CONDITIONS
The ability to function independently while managing multiple client and staff needs and quality assurance tasks is an ongoing expectation of this position.
The program’s supports will focus on equipping residents in building their skills and becoming more independent.
