Currently there is one permanent position and one temporary position available.
This position can be based in any of the following BC Prosecution Service offices: Prince Rupert, Terrace, Smithers, Quesnel, Vanderhoof, Prince George, Williams Lake, Fort St. John, Dawson Creek.
An eligibility list may be established to fill future temporary and permanent vacancies in the Northern Region.
Flexible work arrangements, including the opportunity to volunteer to telework (with conditions) as set out in applicable employer policies may be considered.

The BC Prosecution Service (BCPS) contributes to the protection of society by preparing for and conducting prosecutions diligently and fairly. The BCPS prosecutes offences under the Criminal Code of Canada, the Youth Criminal Justice Act and Provincial Statutes in the Provincial, Supreme and Appeal Courts of British Columbia and in the Supreme Court of Canada. In addition, the BCPS provides legal advice to Government and Police on criminal law matters and develops policies and procedures on issues relating to the prosecution of criminal cases for the BCPS.

As a Paralegal, you will provide a variety of legal administrative support services to Crown Counsel. The file(s) you will work on are large and/or high-profile, complex, sensitive cases which impact the delivery of BC Prosecution Service and Ministry objectives. The services you will provide include, but are not limited to: the management of case information/disclosure/redaction/witnesses; preliminary case-related research and analysis, including noting up of cases, assessing and summarizing material; the coordination of communication flow among parties involved in a case; training in case-related procedures and technology; and BC Prosecution Service project planning and implementation.

A BC Prosecution Service Paralegal has an understanding of substantive and procedural law, uses analytical skills and originates his or her own work. The ability to deal with issues of sensitive and confidential nature with tact, diplomacy and good judgment is a must. The successful applicant will enjoy working with limited direction in a demanding environment, working as part of a team, and have exceptional organization skills, verbal and written communication skills, and attention to detail. This is an outstanding opportunity for someone who is completing their paralegal certification and/or for a full paralegal, who enjoys the challenge of a high-profile, high-volume work environment.

Travel may be a requirement of this position.

Job Requirements:
In order to be considered for this position, your application must clearly demonstrate how you meet the education and experience as outlined below:

Paralegal Growth Level 1-2 (Paralegal 14-15):

  • Secondary school graduation or equivalent;
  • 18 months of experience working in a legal office or equivalent;
  • Stated intention to enrol in a certified Paralegal Certificate/Diploma/Degree Program within 18 months.


Preference may be given to applicants with the following:

  • Successful completion of a Legal Assistant certificate;
  • 1 year of post-secondary education (with an academic focus) in a related field;
  • 2 years of experience working in a criminal justice setting.

Paralegal Growth Level 3-4 (Paralegal 16-17):

  • Secondary school graduation or equivalent;
  • 2.5 years of experience working in a legal office or equivalent;
  • Completion of 1 year of a certified Paralegal Certificate/Diploma/Degree program or equivalent.

Paralegals at level 3-4 typically work with greater independence and are assigned more complex and sensitive prosecution files than Paralegals at level 1-2.

Full Working Level (Paralegal 18):

  • Secondary school graduation or equivalent;
  • 3.5 years of experience working in a legal office or equivalent;
  • Completion of a recognized Paralegal Certificate/Diploma/Degree program or equivalent.

Paralegals at the full working level typically work independently and in close collaboration with Crown Counsel and are assigned more complex/sensitive prosecution files.
