Berry & Smith Trucking is seeking an experienced operations manager to lead our growing trucking division out of our head office in Penticton, BC. Established in 1954, Berry and Smith Trucking is a Family Owned and Operated transportation company providing class leading transportation services to our customers throughout North America.

This position will be accountable for the performance of Berry and Smith’s largest trucking division and tasked with maintaining and expanding customer relations, negotiating rates, supporting dispatch and driver groups as well as balancing sufficient workloads for the fleet. The successful candidate must be a motivated team player capable of developing and coaching operations staff to continually strive for operational excellence and have a comprehensive understanding of the transportation industry.

Responsibilities:

-Negotiating rates and contracts with new and existing customers. Analyze profits and effectively budget in order to meet financial targets.

-Supporting, mentoring and training of operations staff to ensure Berry and Smith’s high customer service and safety objectives are being met.

-Providing out of the box solutions to better meet the needs of new and existing customers.

-Continual monitoring of operational processes to identify efficiencies to be gained.

-Facilitating driver retention through regular communication and equalization of work.

Qualifications, Skills and Requirements:

-Proven leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.

-Minimum of 8 years of successful leadership or operations experience.

-Comprehensive understanding of trucking industry throughout Canada and US: familiarity with US and Canadian Hours of Service rules, National Safety Code, Canada Labor Code, Safety and Compliance factors and Weight and Dimension regulations across Canada and the US.

-Strong computer skills, familiarity in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint). Preference given to candidates with familiarity in TMW Truckmate and Geotab Software.

-Ability to develop business and positive customer relations both in person and remotely. Work with sales to establish new profitable sales and continued growth of current customers.

-Strong organizational skills: time management, project planning and multi-tasking capability.

-Composure under pressure and ability to make quick, logical decisions.

-Flexibility to work hours as required and dictated by the job and availability to be on call for after-hours telephone calls.

-Ability to travel as required for meetings throughout Canada and US.

-Compliance with Company’s Drug and Alcohol policy.
