The Universal Group has an exciting opportunity for a Occupational Health and Safety Advisor to join our Occupational Health and Safety team for a one (1) year contract. Reporting to the Regional Manager, OHS West, the Occupational Health and Safety Advisor partners with the Occupational Health and Safety group and internal clients to drive forward our purpose of providing Peace of Mind to our clients and our employees. By utilizing your well-developed analytical and relationship building skills, you will apply your Occupational Health and Safety experience and knowledge in uncovering underlying issues and resolving them through appropriate means. This, in turn, will ensure that Occupational Health and Safety is seen as a strategic business partner thereby ensuring health and safety is taken seriously and department objectives are met. In addition, you have a high standard of personal ethics and are able to interact with all levels of the organization. You take pride in being proactive, diplomatic and have the ability to act autonomously.


The Role

As an Occupational Health and Safety Advisor you will act as a resource to ensure that the health and safety program is promoted and compliant with operational activities. This will involve gaining a keen understanding of our industry and the Occupational Health and Safety program and applying that understanding when conducting site audits, investigations and facilitating appropriate training for field staff. In order to be successful as our Occupational Health and Safety Advisor, you must be willing to travel and work on any job sites, and be willing to work outside normal business hours.


What you will do:

  • Support field staff in the safe operation of their duties by visiting sites, advising on safe work behaviours, and review safety protocols with field employees.
  • Complete investigations, report on findings, and administer training or recommend corrective actions, as necessary.
  • Review Health & Safety related paperwork including tailboards, FLRAs, inspections, etc.
  • Assist with internal COR audits by applying knowledge and / or experience of the COR program.
  • Assist in the development and communication of Safe Work Practices and Safe Job Procedures.
  • Assess and ensure compliance to applicable safety legislation and internal / client protocols.
  • Assist in the development of Health and Safety performance measures and monitor and report on performance.
  • Facilitate The Universal Group’s Injured Worker Engagement Program.
  • Administer first aid when required.
  • Work with our clients to complete project safety plans, hazard assessments, and Risk Registries for Critical Tasks.

Qualifications

  • Work efficiently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong organizational, planning, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Proficient in Google Workspace applications.
  • Knowledge of OH&S laws and regulations, codes, the Workers Compensation Act, and industry best practices.
  • Completion of an OHS Certificate/Diploma Program at an accredited College or University or Construction Safety Officer certification.
  • Minimum of two years in a safety related position.
  • Some traffic management/industrial/construction background is preferred.
  • Possessing a Traffic Control Person (TCP) certification and / or is certified by the BCCSA in COR internal audits is ideal.

Compensation will be commensurate based on qualifications and experience.
