Overview of role:

WestJet is seeking a Software Developer reporting into our Digital office. We are a team of highly motivated software engineers providing a set of backend products for the internal consumers. We enjoy challenges and take pride in our work. Our portfolio includes a wide range of languages and technologies such as Node.js, Java, Groovy, Docker, k8s, Serverless functions, REST APIs, GraphQL, Mongo DB, Neo4j, etc. Every member of Digital APIs team is responsible for the full SDLC, including testing, deployment, and production support.


As a Software Developer in Digital APIs team, you will create and maintain the delivery of services to support the application programming interfaces (APIs). You will be responsible for maximizing code reusability while also considering design, deployment, and testability. You will also be designing, implementing, testing, deploying, and supporting infrastructure as code to deliver APIs to our consumers. Apply industry-standard processes, practices, and techniques. Work with business stakeholders to develop appropriate software solutions that meet WestJet’s business, technical and quality requirements. Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate with others are essential.


Key deliverables include:

  • Actively and consistently support all efforts to simplify and enhance systems that support the digital functions of the company
  • Design and document APIs, leveraging a standard API documentation framework (OpenAPI)
  • Leverage existing API design patterns or modify them to maintain organizational consistency
  • Participate in the development of new software technology and initiatives which may include, but not limited to code architecture, development, unit testing, and other requirements
  • Automate and document troubleshooting of production applications
  • Implement and design CI/CD pipelines to automate the delivery of our APIs
  • Ensure that all APIs are fully tested in an automated framework, including functional, performance, and vulnerability tests
  • Focus API solution delivery to use cloud-based solutions

Experience and qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required
  • Experience and knowledge in the following areas is required;
  • Deep understanding of JavaScript or Java language
  • Developing RESTful APIs as microservices
  • Continuous integration, testing, and deployment
  • Infrastructure as code (Terraform, Ansible, or similar)
  • Building and deploying Docker containers
  • Cloud services (Azure, AWS, or GCP)
  • Experience and knowledge in the following areas is desired;
  • Node.js web frameworks (hapi, express)
  • Kubernetes
  • Java Springboot web application development
  • Groovy language
  • Linux administration
  • Implementing advanced monitoring for platforms and applications
