Duties: Under the general supervision of the By-Law Co-ordinator – Animal Care and Control or Designate.

  • Perform animal care services such as feeding, cleaning and minor health care treatments, and where necessary, the supply of injections, medicine and creams under the support and direction of a Veterinarian or designate.
  • Provide environmental enrichment, socialization, and physical activity (e.g. walking the dogs and socializing of cats, etc.) to the animals within the facility on a daily basis.
  • Take charge and/or handle animals as required, and to restrain hard to control animals.
  • Ensure all interior and exterior shelter areas are constantly clean, disinfected and maintained to ensure the overall cleanliness of the facility.
  • Perform general housekeeping duties including but not limited to laundry and dishes. Including the general cleaning of common areas, staff room, bathroom, kitchen, and disposal of wastes.
  • Clean and maintain Animal Care and control equipment including but not limited to animal crates, cages, fridges, freezers, and live traps.
  • Seasonal maintenance of outdoor areas including snow removal and salting/sanding of walkways, entrances and exits.
  • Provide administrative support and cash handling duties including processing transactions, inventory and maintenance of records relating to intake, licensing and adoption.
  • Provide customer service (e.g. answer phones, provide basic information, help with adoptions) to the general public, and promote responsible pet ownership by obtaining animal licences.
  • Assist with fundraising and events to promote the Shelter and adoptable animals.
  • Routinely prepare and pick up animals for transport, shelter supplies, donations, using the City’s fleet vehicle provided, as necessary.
  • Perform typing, filing and miscellaneous clerical duties.
  • Assist other employees within the Section with their duties during periods of overload, vacation or absence.
  • Develop and maintain a thorough working knowledge of CGS’s Safety Manual and the applicable Provincial Legislation listed therein.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • Successful completion of Secondary School (Grade XII) Education.
  • Additional animal related courses/education, Veterinary Assistant or Animal Care College certificate considered an asset.
  • Over one (1) year up to and including two and a half (2½) years of experience in an animal shelter, veterinary clinic, or other animal related facility.
  • Experience in the handling of animals and knowledge in animal care practices in relation to animal sheltering is essential.
  • Knowledge of common diseases, their symptoms and means of transmission, administration of oral medications, assessment of change in animal status.
  • Strong sense of teamwork and collaboration, and the ability to work independently as well as take direction.
  • Demonstrate interpersonal skills in dealing with the public in a courteous and effective manner.
  • Ability to recognize and deal effectively with a diversity of animals, problems and behaviours with the experience of medicating animals and handling feral, aggressive and under socialized animals.
  • Demonstrate satisfactory physical abilities matching job requirements (e.g. lifting and carrying materials weighing up to 40 lbs., cleaning kennels, restraining large dogs weighing up to 150 lbs, and feral cats, etc.).
  • Demonstrated ability related to the use of computer software and administrative systems in a Windows environment (e.g. file maintenance, word processing, spreadsheet applications, information input and retrieval, etc.).
  • Must be able to work flexible shifts, weekends and holidays.
  • Must be physically capable of completing assigned duties while being exposed to various animal allergens.
  • Provide, at own cost, a Criminal Record Check.
  • Satisfactory health, attendance and former employment history.
  • Must be physically capable of operating a vehicle safely, possess a valid driver’s licence, have an acceptable driving record, and personal insurance coverage.
